NHGRI Launches Genomic Careers Resource for Students
The Resource Uses Videos and Interactivity to Showcase Career Opportunities in Genetics and Genomics To help students planning their professional careers understand the opportunities in the fields of genetics and genomics, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) today launched the Genomic Careers Resource on the institute's Web site, genome.gov. The careers resource showcases nearly 50 career opportunities through video interviews, career profiles, tools to rate potential career choices, and an interactive game.
"We designed the career resource to showcase real people engaged in a wide variety of activities in the fields of genetics and genomics," said Vence Bonham, chief of NHGRI's Education and Community Involvement Branch, which created the new Web site. "It is filled with tools that can help students narrow down the careers they want to pursue in these growing fields." The Genomic Careers Resource currently has the following major components: ORIENTATION Welcome videos explain how to use the Web site and give an introduction to genomics. The Web site also includes a share button that gives users the ability to distribute content through social media networks.

2010 Nanobiotechnology Explorations Summer Camp
June 21 July 2
8:30am 12:30pm
Led by Harrisburg University faculty, this camp uses lecture components, lab experiments and class discussions to provide a basic understanding of nanobiotechnology. The camp is for high school students who have completed of high school biology, algebra, or chemistry. The camp will cover topics such as nanomaterials, DNA and protein-based biosensors, nanomaterials for alternative energy and environment and characterization techniques such as atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Students will gain hands-on experience in a combination of lecture-laboratory activities and in field trips to various nanobiotechnology-based facilities such as Hanson Technologies, Aptagen LLC, and Penn State Nanofabrication Facility.
Attendees can earn two college credits upon successful completion. To apply for the camp, complete the University's Dual Enrollment Application by going online to http://www.harrisburgu.edu/academics/high-school. Students must submit a high school transcript and may need to undergo the COMPASS placement exam. The Dual Enrollment rate for the camp is $446. A limited number of scholarships are available for qualified students. Students interested in applying for scholarships to the camp must submit an application and a letter of recommendation from an educator prior to May 15.
Topics:
* Basics of Nanobiotechnology
* Nanomaterials
* Nanotherapy & Nanodiagnostics
* DNA & Protein-based Biosensors
* Characterization techniques such as:
o Atomic Force Microscopy
o Electron Microscopy
o Fluorescence Spectroscopy
Prequisites
To be prepared for the course, students interested in enrolling in the camp should have completed two of the following high school classes:
